Earthian Society members make a commitment to take personal actions to help create a more caring and sustainable world. We believe we are what we DO, and that our actions do make a difference. As Mahatma Ghandi said “we must be the change we want to see in the world” ... it's up to us. Put a check beside the actions you will take ... IN THE HOME ___ Install energy-saving lightbulbs ___ Unplug electronics when not in use ___ Turn off unnecessary lights ___ Turn your thermostat down by 1 degree ___ Switch to a green energy provider ___ Don't air condition an empty room ___ Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth ___ Hang your laundry to dry instead of using the dryer ___ Repair and refurbish things rather than buying new ones ___ Do a house-cleaning and donate your discards – mobile phone, computer, books, eyeglasses, clothes, furniture, appliances TRANSPORTATION ___ Walk, bike or take transit to regular destinations ___ Car Pool ___ Use a bicycle for short trips ___ Turn your engine off if idling more than 10 seconds ___ Make your next car purchase a hybrid
SHOPPING ___ Use recyclable shopping bags -- decline plastic bags ___ Support local business and local products ___ Purchase environmentally-friendly products -- cleaning products, laundry and dishwasher detergents ___ Purchase paper products made from recycled paper -- paper towels, bathroom tissue ___ Buy fair-trade products ___ Use a mug not a disposable cup HELP THE POOR ___ Give to a charity that helps the poor – Salvation Army, Oxfam, etc. ___ Adopt a Child in the Developing World – Foster Parents, Oxfam ___ Give to your Local Food Bank ENVIRONMENT ___ Plant a tree ___ Stop using pesticides ___ Pick up litter ___ Recycle glass, metal, paper and plastic ___ Compost organic kitchen waste ___ Donate to the World Wildlife Fund, Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, David Suzuki Foundation or similar environmental organization. INFLUENCE POWERHOLDERS ___ Write a letter to your government representative on an issue you care about ___ Participate in a demonstration or march

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT ___ Read an article each week in each SHIP area (use ES website for this) ___ Exercise at least three times a week ___ Greet everyone you meet with a smile ___ Watch less tv ___ Join a group ___ Become a volunteer ___ Find happiness and self-worth through non-material avenues; minimize consumption and status displays
