I forgot my password

1. On the homepage you will see a "Forgot Password" link at the top right. Click the link  to bring up a form for entering your Username and e-mail address. 2. Complete the form and click "Send Password"  3. You will receive a new password shortly. Use this new password to access the site. You can change this password after you login.


How do I change my password?

1. Login to the site and click the "About ES" link in the top menu. 2. Under the Social Menu on the right side, click "Personal Page".  3.  At the bottom of your Profile, click "Update Your Profile"  4. Click on the  "Contact Info" tab and type a new password. Type it again in Verify Password  5. Click the "Update" button when you are finished.


How do I update my personal information?

1. Login to the site and click the "About Us" link in the top menu. 2. Under the Social Menu on the right side, click "Personal Page".  3.  At the bottom of your Profile, click "Update Your Profile"  4. Click on each tab to change or add your information. 5. Click the "Update" button when you are finished.


How do I add an image to my profile?

1.  Login to the site and click the "About ES" link in the top menu.  2. Under the Social Menu on the right side, click "Personal Page".  3.  At the bottom of your Profile, click "Update Your Image"  4. Click "browse" to find the photo to upload on your computer, then click on the name in the listing and then click the "Upload" button. Please note the maximum filesize for the photo is 40 KB.
 

How is my personal information used?

We respect our members' right to privacy. We never rent, sell, trade or otherwise share any personal information or our mailing lists with other organizations. Please see our Privacy Policy for more information.


How do I donate?

Click here, or click the "Click to Invest" button at the top of the right panel.  

How do I volunteer? What kinds of volunteer opportunities are available?

Earthian Society requires volunteers in many areas including forum moderators, writers, researchers, marketing and publicity, fundraising, photo illustrators and project management. Most of this can be accomplished through the internet at a time that is convenient for you. If you are interested in volunteering, please send us an email.


How do I join a project team?

To join a team, members can view Project Updates to see existing ES projects and contact the Project Manager through personal messaging, or send us an email stating what project you are interested in. Members are encouraged to join project teams. They perform a vital role in Earthian Society, transforming member ideas and discussions into concrete actions. Without project teams and projects, there is no action. Without action, there is no positive change.

 

TECHNICAL ISSUES

What browser versions are required?

Internet Explorer 5.5 (or higher), Firefox 1.x (or higher) and Netscape 8 (or higher).

What browser settings are required?

You need to have your browser configured to accept cookies and ensure it is javascript enabled.

What are cookies and why does my browser have to accept them?

A cookie is a small text file that is stored on your computer by the browser you're using. This text file is how we identify you as a member. ES uses a cookie to remember certain information such as your site width and type-size preferences and your username/password, so that you are not required to log in each time you return to the site. Note: You must click the "Remember me" checkbox in the login form for this to work. More information about cookies can be found at Wikipedia.

How do I configure my browser to accept cookies and turn JavaScript on?

To turn on javascript in Internet Explorer: 1. Click "Tools"  2. Choose "Internet Options"  3.  Click the "Security" tab  4. Click "Custom Level"   5.  In the list of options, find "Scripting of Java applets" and select "Enable".

To enable cookies in Internet Explorer: 1.  Click "Tools" and then choose "Internet Options"  2.  On the "Privacy" tab, click "Advanced"  3.  Check that both options for cookies are set to "Accept".

To turn on javascript in Firefox:  1.  Click "Tools" and then choose "Options"  2.  Click the "Content/Web Features" tab  3.  Check the box beside "Enable Javascript".

To enable cookies in Firefox:  1.  Click "Tools" and then choose "Options"  2.  Click the "Privacy" tab  3.  Click the "Cookies" tab and check the box beside "Allow sites to set cookies"

Mac OS X users with Safari: 1.  Under Safari in the menu bar, choose “Preferences” and then click the “Security” tab. In the Web Content area, check the "Enable JavaScript" checkbox and close the Preferences window.

Other browsers:  Consult the browsers’ help files and documentation to learn how to enable JavaScript and cookies.

How can I start a blog?  Write a Blog Entry?

1. Click "Home" on the top menu, and In the Social Menu on the right click on "My Blog" to view your blog, or "Write A Blog Entry" to update your blog.

How do I create a photo gallery? Add photos?

1. Click "Home" on the top menu, and In the Social Menu on the right click on "Personal Page".  2. Click on the "Photos" tab and then on the "Submit New Gallery Entry" text.  3. Click "browse" to find the photo to upload on your computer, then click on the name in the listing and then click the "Submit Gallery Entry" button. Please note the maximum size for any photo is 50 KB.

How do I add friends?

To add a friend: 1. Click "Home" on the top menu, and in the Social Menu on the right, click "Member List" 2. Click on the Username of the person.  3.  On the person's profile page, scroll to the bottom and click "Add Connection".

To view and edit friends: 1. Click "Home" in the top menu and in the Social Menu on the right, click "Personal Page".  2. Click the Connections tab and your current friends are displayed.  3. To remove the friend, click the red "x" above the photo. 4. To edit a friends details, click "Manage Your Connections" under the photo.  5. After editing, click the "Update" button.

How do I send personal messages?

To send a private message to a member -- 1. Click "Home" in the top menu and in the Social Menu on the right, click "My Messages".  2. Click the "New Message" link on the left. 3.  To find a member, click on "Find Members" to the right of the "To: ____" field.

To send a public message to a member -- 1. Click "Home" in the top menu and in the Social Menu on the right, click "Member List".  2. Click on the person's name in the listing.  3. On the person's Profile Page, click on the "Visitor Book" tab.  4. Click "Sign Profile Book" in the panel.

How do I chat with other Members?

1. Click "Home" on the top menu, and In the Social Menu on the right click on "Member Chat".  2. Type your message in the small white "Message" box and then click the "Send" button at the bottom. Your message will then appear in the top message box.

How do I find other members?

Click "Home" or "About ES" in the top menu to show the Social Menu on the right. In the Social Menu, click the "Member List" link. In the listings, click on the Members name.


How do I take part in Surveys?

Click "Home" or "About ES" in the top menu to show the "Surveys List " menu on the right. Click on the Survey you would like to take. Note: If you see values already in the survey questions, these are your previous responses. You can change your responses, if desired, by going through the survey and changing the values. You can only take each survey once.


How do I submit links to interesting content?

Send an email using the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of each page. Please use "Link" as your message subject and include the url in your message.

How do I access the archives?

Each of the top menu items has an "Archives" link in the drop-down menu. Click this link and then specify the month and year of the archived article you want to access. If you don't know the month/year of the archived article, you can do a search using the search panel at the very top of the page, or the Search (advanced) link on the right menu. All archived articles are available through searches.


How do I report a problem with the website?

Send us an email using the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of every page. Please use "Website Problem" as your message subject. Include your browser type (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, etc.) and version if possible.


ES FORUMS

How do I post my ideas in the Forums?

1.  Access the Forums section of the website by clicking the "Forums" link from the right side menu or mousing over the top menu items and clicking the "Forums" link in each drop-down menu.  2.  Click on the name of the Board where you would like to post.  3.  Click on the "New Topic" button at the top of the Board.  4.  Fill in the Subject and message areas and the click the "Post" or "Preview" button at the bottom. Preview lets you check your post before posting. Note: Under "Additional Options" you can be notified of replies to this topic. Please leave the other boxes unchecked.

How do I reply to a post?

Go to the topic and click the "Reply" button at the top (or bottom) of the topic. Compose your message and click the "Post" or "Preview" button below the form. Note: Under "Additional Options" you can specify if you wish to be notified of new replies to the topic.

How do I see replies to my posts?

At the top of each Forums page, just under your name, click on the "Show new replies to your posts" link. This will bring up a list of your posts that have new replies. Click on the reply (the bigger text) you would like to read.


Can I be notified of new replies to my posts?

Yes, you can be notified by email of any replies to a Board (a collection of topics) or Topic. 1. In the Forums Menu, click "Profile".  2.  From the left side menu, click the "Notification and Email" link under Modify Profile. 3. Check the desired boxes and click "Save settings". Note: Under the save settings button, you will see your current notification status. 4. Click on "Forum Menu" in the top menu and click on the Board or Topic on which you would like notification.  5. Click the "Notify" button at the top of the board or topic.

How do I access unread posts?

At the top of each Forums page, just under your name, click on the "Show unread posts since last visit" link. This will bring up a list of unread posts. Click on the post you would like to read. You can also "mark all posts as read" by clicking on the link at the bottom of this page.

 How do I search the Forums?

You can use the Search field or "Advanced Search" in the top area to search through posts. The advanced search allows for searching only certain boards or using exact phrases.

How do I subscribe/unsubscribe to the ES newsletter?

Newsletter functionality is presently not available. 


How do I subscribe/unsubscribe to the ES RSS feed?

1. Click "Home" or "About ES" on the top menu to show the  RSS icon link in the right menu.  2. Click this link and select the newsreader service or application you will be using. The latest newsfeed is shown. It includes the Latest 5 Articles posted on the site and Earthian Society News ("What's New with ES" and "Website Update" sections).

In the end, the choice [between] these two alternatives — Grab the Oil or Energy Reconfiguration — this decision is much bigger than oil alone. It is a choice about the fundamental ethos and, in fact, the very nature of the country. Most immediately, it is about democracy versus empire. In economic terms, it is about prosperity or poverty. In engineering terms, it is a matter of efficiency over waste. In moral terms this is the choice of sufficiency or gluttony.From the standpoint of the environment, it is a preference for stewardship over continued predation. In the ways the US deals with other countries it is the choice of cooperation versus dominance. And in spiritual terms, it is the choice of hope, freedom and purpose over fear, dependency and despair. In this sense, this is truly the decision that will define the future of America and perhaps the world.
